WHAT IS A HYGIENIC (CLEAN ROOM) AIR HANDLING UNIT?

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

Hygienic Air Handling Units are dedicated ventilation equipment for clean air supply to hygienic spaces such as hospitals, food processing facilities, pharmaceutical and manufacturing facilities. It is becoming one of the most popular commercial HVAC technologies for industries worldwide, explore to read more

WHAT A HYGIENIC AHU CAN DELIVER?

Uniquely, a Hygienic Air Handling Unit can provide 100% airflow supply and 0% airflow return, which means no air is being recycled into the system, unlike a standard air handling unit or a heat recovery ventilator.

Hygienic Air Handling Unit build-architecture consists of multiple filters and specialised coatings to reach 100% hygienic approval – the advanced filtration helps to eliminate harmful particles, ensuring a controlled and safe atmosphere throughout the building

COMMON HYGIENIC AHU COMPONENTS

  • Filtration System (typically included HEPA filters)
  • Cooling and/or Heating Coil (similar to standard Air Handling Unit)
  • Direct Driven Fan
  • Clean Casings (typically with aluminium or stainless steel)
  • UV (Ultraviolet radiation feature is optional)
  • Inner Stainless Steel Components (such as hardware, fasteners, drain pans…etc)

COMMON APPLICATIONS FOR HYGIENIC AHU

Hygienic AHUs can be applied to any applications, as long as clean air supply is required. The most common applications are found inside Healthcare, Food Processing and Manufacturing Facilities:

  • Hospitals
  • Clinics & Surgeries
  • Food Processing
  • Beverage Processing
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing
  • Electronics Manufacturing
  • Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
  • Medicine Storages

HOW TO USE IT?

The implementation and selection process of hygienic air handling unit is much similar to standard air handling unit. HVAC engineers should note the required airflow, external pressure, type of coil (DX or hygienic), and cooling or heating requirement. Additional customisations included: filters type, UV, type of casings, type of fans and motors
